With more than one in five children in poverty, according to international estimates (OECD), child poverty in Uruguay has emerged as a central concern across all political parties. The upcoming general election in 2024 presents an opportune moment to address this issue comprehensively.
This project aims to consolidate recent learning and provide evidence on priority actions for reducing child poverty in Uruguay, with a view to informing political parties’ decision making in the run up to the general election in 2024. It analyses the current landscape of child poverty and policy responses in Uruguay, providing insights into the effectiveness of existing measures and identifying opportunities for improvement. It provides updates on spending profiles, examines the cost of inaction, and conducts cost-benefit analyses of potential policy reforms. By synthesising recent literature and empirical evidence, it serves as a foundation for evidence-informed advocacy for prioritising and implementing effective solutions with estimates of the impact of the proposed policy reforms -on families and on Uruguay’s social and economic development more broadly.
This project has been undertaken for UNICEF Uruguay, ahead of Uruguay’s upcoming general election in 2024. The project runs from May to October 2024.
